Facing Your Health And Fitness Realities

Let’s face it, as we age our bodies go through a variety of changes, our physical appearances, anatomy, even our brain functions. This proves that change in our bodies is a constant and apparently inevitable. So these are the facts, I don’t care how old you are, no one finds aging fun but our bodies need to age in order for it to adapt and survive. To get the most out of your body and to slow down the ageing process, you have to make certain adjustments as you age.

It is obvious that what you could do 10 even 5 years ago may not seem as easy now. Not to get too scientific but aging is caused by cells dying and new ones being formed. Now the rate of cells regenerating slows down as we age. The most effective way to maintain your existing cells is to eat right and exercise. That simplifies it enough doesn’t it? It’s like the little lessons your parents taught you while you were growing up, “look both ways when crossing the street”, don’t talk to strangers”, “don’t touch that it’s hot”!! Well I’m here to tell you another one don’t put that in your body it’ll kill you!!

Facing ones health realities is simple, if you knowingly had a life threatening disease and there’s a medication you have been told by your physician to take to stay healthy and alive, would you simply ignore the doctor’s advice? My father who happens to be a doctor, had a favourite phrase for my sisters and I while growing up, in his deep Darth Vader like voice he’d say, “if you want, you can listen, if not then be ready to live with the outcome” though it sounds more profound in Yoruba when he says it but it really drove it home for me.

Face facts, if you are putting on weight that’s more than you should have, there’s either a medical reason or you are simply eating too much! As adults we’ve got to make responsible decisions everyday and in some cases these decisions can affect our entire lives. Logic would dictate that if you know something is dangerous to your health, you would avoid it. Now we know the world over that people simple ignore that fact and usually lunge head first into the 1000lbs of fried chicken, while nursing a plaque build up in their coronary artery. If you are seeking a life-on-the-edge-living-dangerously-death-wishful-thrill then you are jumping off the right cliff, with a very short, impending conclusive end!

Come on people!! We all want to look good, feel young, sexy and not go bald, but hey there’s a lot to be said about what we want, one of them is that we can’t always get it. So when someone says to me “I exercise so I eat whatever I want” in the same breath they say “and I dunno why I’m not losing weight”! Obviously their blinders are wielded on and they don’t want to see, let alone acknowledge the realities of their predicament.

Medical science evolves every day…literally, and something new and informative comes out every 60 seconds that’s a fact!! So if the information that’s out there or given to you based on years of research, studies and experiments are saying the same thing then you would be wise to simply listen. If you are eating a lot of fatty foods and not exercising much you are just skirting that cliff I was talking about earlier. A lot of people know this from personal experience, they ate a lot of unhealthy foods for a long period time and they put on huge amounts of weight. The wonderful thing about the human body is that it can reverse that seemingly doomed effect. The reality is this, it takes 3500 Calories to burn 1lb (0.45kg) of fat, so if you want to lose a pound a week, you’ve got to burn 500 Cals. a day. You have to take less in and put more out!!

Now don’t get me wrong, there are certain things that even I feel we deserve to indulge in, the sad fact is that we continue to indulge till it becomes a medical problem. We sometimes seem to forget to keep ourselves accountable and tell ourselves when we’ve had enough. I’ve got to say, it’s not that I’m immune to the tasty, seductive sensations that fresh muffins straight from the oven gives you, but as the plaque above the door of the Oracle’s apartment in the movieThe Matrix says “Nosce Te Ipsum” Know thyself”!!
